Fixed a possible memory leak when closing the program.

Recent changes not reflected in this guide

00 June 2025:
Added a function to save the last playback position as a marker. The function works as follows: if you close the program during playback, a new marker will be automatically added to the timeline. The marker description will contain the line «LAST PLAY POSITION» and the date/time the program was closed. This is useful, for example, when listening to long audiobooks. The marker will be added only if you close the player during playback. If you press STOP or PAUSE and then close the program, the marker will not be added
Accordingly, a new option has been added to the settings window. The option depends on the auto save markers option. Therefore, if you enable the save last position checkbox, the auto save markers checkbox will also be enabled. Also, if you have the save position checkbox enabled and you disable the auto save markers option, the auto save markers checkbox will also be disabled.

08 June 2025:

1. Improved logic of the «Compact» button. Now the button does not just reduce the size of the main Roxy Player window to a minimum, but remembers the previous size. Thus, pressing the button again restores the previous window size. The window size in compact mode has been reduced. Now the compact mode looks like this:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

2. The images on the buttons for adding and deleting markers and on the buttons for moving to the previous and next marker have been replaced now

Roxy cat

Roxy Audio Player can work in the system as a default player for MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA files. The player can play audio files of any length, from a few milliseconds to tens of hours. First of all, the player was developed as a player of long files with a timeline and with the ability to add an unlimited number of named markers and the ability to quickly go to any of the markers in the list.

Roxy Audio Player supports working with playlists (Playlist), loading and saving playlists.

Roxy Audio Player is a modern native 64-bit application written in the latest (2025) version of Embarcadero Delphi Community Edition V12. The Bass library, free for non-commercial use, is used as a sound engine.

Markers or History of Program Creation

Why is there a list of markers in the main program window, and the playlist opens in an additional window? The story of how Roxy Audio Player was created can help clarify this question. Perhaps some of you know that I have a YouTube channel dedicated to traveling in India (and not only). One day, I found an audiobook on the Internet that told about the author’s travels in India. I had an idea to create a stream on my channel with joint listening to this book and my comments. The audiobook was an MP3 file with a duration of more than 6 hours. I decided to write a small player with a timeline and the ability to add markers to this timeline. It was necessary to be able to add descriptions to markers and quickly go to these markers. Thus, before the stream, you could prepare by placing markers in the player, describe the topics and then during the stream not listen to the entire book, but only selected moments. Working in some popular player like Aimp, etc. would be extremely inconvenient with such long files.

The point is that in a standard player it is almost impossible to accurately position the playback point if your file is long. Probably everyone has encountered this in audio or video players. It is problematic even with a half-hour long file. In Roxy Audio Player you can scale the timeline as you like and very accurately set the playback position and markers regardless of the file duration.

I wrote such a simple player in a few hours. The very first version did not support playlists. It was «sharpened» specifically for markers and long MP3 files. But then an idea appeared to expand the functionality of the player and dedicate it to my cat Roxy. To tell the truth, the idea to write Roxy — Player appeared a long time ago, so that you could listen to music and always see Roxy on the screen. As a result, the creation of the first version of the player took about 5 days.

Manual

System requirements: 64 bit windows. Since Roxy Audio Player is a 64 bit application, it will not run on a 32 bit system, such as Windows7 32 bit. But it will work on Windows7-64 and higher.

Timeline

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

The timeline is the player’s time scale (track). When an audio file is opened in the player, it is presented here. The timeline contains the playback position (bold blue vertical strip), which is also called the playhead by analogy with tape recorders, time marks and markers. During file playback, the playhead moves along the timeline. You can set the position to the desired place by clicking the mouse on the timeline. You can also move forward and backward by a fixed time by pressing the arrow keys on the keyboard. The time interval for moving the arrows can be set in the settings window from 1 to 30 seconds.

The timeline display scale can be changed in several ways:

Using the Zoom+ and Zoom- buttons:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

-With the + and — keys on the keyboard

-With the mouse wheel (the most convenient way)

If the entire file does not fit on the timeline, a scroll bar appears below it, allowing you to move along the timeline to the right and left.

Auto scrolling of the timeline is a function when during playback the timeline scrolls automatically when the playback position reaches a position near the right border of the timeline. Thus, the playback position always remains in the visible area of the timeline. This function is enabled by checking the [AS:] (Auto Scroll) box:

Маркеры

Markers are marks on the timeline that indicate the positions you need in the audio file (for example, chapters in an audiobook).

Markers can be added to the timeline only if an audio file is loaded into the player. A marker is added to the time position where the playback position is currently located. Markers can be added to the timeline in several ways:

Method 1. To add a marker, click the [Drop Marker] button:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

Method 2. Press the [M] key on your keyboard
Method 3. Right-click on the timeline and select Drop Marker from the menu that appears:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

After adding a marker, it will appear on the timeline as a red stripe and a time stamp. At the same time, the marker will appear as a line in the marker list. The marker list is a table that is always located under the timeline and panels with buttons:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

The marker list allows you to see all markers for a given file at once. You can edit the marker description in the list. To edit, select the marker in the table and click the [Edit…] button on the left above the list. A small editing line will appear where you can enter text and click OK:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

You can delete the current marker from two places: from the marker list and on the timeline. To delete a marker from the list, select the marker and click the [Delete…] button. To delete from the timeline, set the playback position next to the desired marker and click the button:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

The marker can also be deleted by pressing Delete on the keyboard or from the right-click menu on the timeline:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

You can delete all markers at once by selecting the «Delete All Narkers…» option in this menu.

Dragging markers on the timeline

You can change the marker timecode by simply dragging the markers left and right on the timeline. Pick up the marker with the mouse and drag it to a new position. If you can’t drag the marker, the marker lock function is enabled. It can be turned on and off in the settings window or via the right-click menu on the timeline:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

Navigate by markers

You can «jump» between markers by double-clicking on the desired line in the marker table. Also via the pop-up menu on the marker list — the Jump To Marker option. If you do this during playback, the playback will not stop, it will simply continue from the marker position.

You can go to the next or previous marker by clicking on the buttons on the toolbar:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

In this case, the player will enter pause mode and the position will move to the position of the marker following the current position. To continue playback, you will need to click on the Play/Pause button (or press the SPACEBAR, which duplicates this button.

Saving markers

Markers for the current file can be saved to a text file with the extension .mrk. This is actually a regular text file. Each line of this file contains the marker’s timecode and its description. The timecode and description are separated by commas.

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

Example of marker file contents

You do not need to worry about the location of the marker file for your audio file. The program always saves these files in the same folder where your audio file is located. The marker file name is created by adding the .mrk extension to the file name. To successfully save markers, the folder with your music files must not be write-protected. Otherwise, the program will not be able to save markers.

When loading a music file into the player, the program checks whether there is also a marker file next to the file. If there is a corresponding marker file on the disk, it will be automatically loaded into the program. Therefore, you do not need to worry about opening markers manually.

If the markers have not been changed or loaded, the information label on the toolbar will look like this:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

As soon as you perform any action with the marker (adding, deleting, changing the description or dragging) this mark will turn red:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

This means that markers need to be saved so that changes are not lost when the program is closed or when another file is loaded for playback. To save markers, simply click the Save Markers button:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

In order not to worry about saving markers, you can enable the automatic marker saving function in the settings window. Then the marker file will be saved automatically when you switch to another music file or when you close the player. You can also set the font size for the marker table in the settings. Actually, this is all you need to know about markers in the Roxy Audio Player program.

Playing files in Roxy Audio Player

There are several ways to open and play files in Roxy Audio Player.

  1. Open the file directly from the main window of Roxy Audio Player by clicking on the open file button:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

2. Drag an audio file from Windows Explorer to the main Roxy Audio Player window

3. By double-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer — if Roxy Audio Player is set as the default audio player

4.By loading one or more files into a playlist (playlist) and starting playback from the playlist.

After opening the file from the main window, click the PLAY button on the left toolbar. Playback will begin. You can also press the SPACEBAR on your keyboard to start and pause. The STOP button will stop playback and the position will return to the beginning of the file.

Dragging a file from Explorer to the Roxy Audio Player window works the same way.

Opening from Windows Explorer (if the player is set as the default program for audio files). Playback will begin immediately after double-clicking the file in Explorer. You can even leave the player window minimized — playback will still occur.

Read more about playing from a playlist in the Playlist section.

Volume control

The playback volume can be changed by moving the green slider up and down on the right with the mouse. The volume level will be displayed on the green text label also on the top right. The volume can also be changed by rotating the mouse wheel on the slider or on the green label.

Adjusting the volume with the mouse wheel is convenient in compact mode, when the window size is reduced to a minimum, hiding the marker table and volume slider:

Compact mode and compact mode button. To exit compact mode, simply stretch the window with your mouse.

EQ

Roxy Player contains a 9-band equalizer for fine-tuning the sound. When the equalizer is on, its bands are displayed in different colors. The lower the frequency of the equalizer band, the redder the color. If you turn off the equalizer, it becomes gray. You can adjust the frequency bands by dragging them up and down with the mouse or by using the mouse wheel on the corresponding band. The frequency and gain/attenuation are displayed in a tooltip near the mouse pointer. Band frequencies: 63, 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000 and 16000 Hz. You can reset the equalizer to its original state by clicking the [Res.] button. Next to this button is the equalizer switch. The equalizer settings are saved when you close the program.

Playlist

A playlist is a list of files that the program can play automatically. In addition, playlists can be created for quick access to specific files on your computer.

The playlist is located in a separate program window. You can open the window by clicking the button on the toolbar:

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

Or by pressing the [L] key on your keyboard.

Roxy Audio Player v1.0 (English)

Playlist window.

  1. File table. This displays a list of your audio files. The first column contains the file number, then the file name, and its location on the disk. You can drag the rows in the table up and down with the mouse, changing their order.
  2. File information. Updated by single-clicking on a list row or when you start playing the next file.
  3. Clear list button. Deletes all files. Convenient for creating a new list
  4. Open a previously saved playlist button
  5. Save current playlist button
  6. Add new files to list button. This will open a dialog for selecting files on the disk. You can select one or more files
  7. Add Folders button. This function searches for audio files in the added folder, as well as in all subfolders. Therefore, be careful with this function. If you add a folder with a very large number of files and subfolders, scanning the folders may take a long time.
  8. Delete current line from list button
  9. PLAY button. Start playback from the list. Playback will start with the file that is selected in the list. Works only if there is at least one file in the list
  10. PAUSE/PLAY button, as in the main window. Works only if there is at least one file in the list
  11. STOP button
  12. Go to the previous and next file in the list. These buttons are duplicated in the main program window.
  13. Auto-Stop switch. If you check the box, only one file from the list will be played. The program will not automatically start playing the next file. This is often useful. To make the Player automatically play the next file when the current one ends, uncheck this box.
  14. Button for quickly switching to the main player window.
  15. Button for calling the program settings window.
  16. Volume control. Works the same as in the main window.

You can also add files to the playlist by dragging them from Windows Explorer to the playlist table. You can also drag entire folders to the table. Not to be confused with dragging and dropping into the main player window. If you select several files and drag them into the main window, only the first file from the group will be loaded into the player. If you drag the same files into the playlist, all of them will be added to the table.

In the settings window, you can enable the function of automatically adding files to the playlist when they are opened in the main player window. In this way, we will have a playlist that displays the history of what we have listened to in the player. Well, in general, this can be useful.
